Choosing Weight Loss Surgery

Losing weight can be a struggle, especially for those who have diligently adopted diet and exercise routines with no results. For individuals who have been trying for years to make a change without success, weight loss surgery often seems like an easy, effective way to lose weight and keep it off.

If you have suffered from clinical obesity for a significant period of time or struggle with health issues related to weight, surgery may be the best choice for your body and your health. Even with the possibility of lasting results and rapid weight loss, not every patient is a good candidate for surgery, and not all surgical methods will be right for everyone.

If you want to determine whether weight loss surgery is right for you, Clovis Community Weight-Loss Surgery Center is here to help. Our facility is dedicated to getting results while supporting you throughout the process. We can help you explore the surgical procedures available, evaluate your eligibility, and assist you in making the best possible decisions.

Surgical Criteria

Weight loss surgery holds many advantages for eligible candidates struggling with excess weight. In order to be considered for a surgical procedure, you will need to meet specific criteria, including:

  • A BMI over 40 or at least 100 pounds in excess weight

  • A BMI over 35 with at least one weight-related health condition, like diabetes or heart disease

  • Age 18 or older, or age 16 or older with a very high BMI or health complications

  • A history of exercise and diet over the course of many years without success

  • A commitment to healthy living

  • Willingness to abide by diet and exercise requirements before and after surgery

All prospective patients are evaluated on a case by case basis by a member of our surgical team. The ability to commit to regimen changes is a serious part of this process; those who meet the physical requirements for surgery but are not willing to make dramatic and enduring shifts to lifestyle are likely to be denied for a surgical procedure. Due to the changes within the body, successful candidates must be willing to live by a new set of rules and habits for the remainder of life after surgery in order to stay healthy and maintain weight loss.

Surgical Options

Bariatric surgery comes in numerous forms and functions. In order to best accommodate those in need of weight loss surgery, Clovis Community Weight-Loss Surgery Center is pleased to offer three surgical procedures.

  • Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass: the oldest and most popular form of bariatric surgery, a gastric bypass creates a small pouch out of the existing stomach and reattaches the small intestine to this newly created smaller stomach pouch.

  • Sleeve Gastrectomy: in a sleeve gastrectomy, the size of the stomach is surgically reduced, leaving only a small sleeve roughly the size and shape of a banana.

  • Gastric Band: the least invasive process, gastric banding places a flexible, removable band around the stomach to slow the passage of food throughout the digestive tract, minimize appetite, and control food consumption.
